Aerogel is a kind of solid material with nanoscale porous three-dimensional network structure, its main components are solid and gas. It is characterized by low density, low thermal conductivity, high specific surface area and excellent adsorption properties.

The flexibility of aerogel materials depends on their composition and density. Classic silica, metal oxides, and carbon aerogels are not flexible and are often very fragile.

Although aerogel itself may be limited in terms of flexibility, with the continuous progress of science and technology, people have begun to explore improving the performance of aerogel. For example, by compounding aerogel with other materials (glass fiber, ceramic fiber, carbon fiber, etc.), its flexibility and strength can be increased. Such composite materials can provide better flexibility and plasticity to a certain extent.

In order to facilitate transportation and construction, aerogel composite materials are usually made into roll felt or plate shape. They have the following characteristics:

1, low density: The density of aerogel composites is very low, usually between 0.02 and 0.3 g/cm3. This makes it widely used in thermal insulation, thermal insulation and other fields.

2, high specific surface area: aerogel composites have a high specific surface area, which means that it can provide more surface area to adsorb pollutants and water molecules.

3, strong flexibility: due to the softness of the fiber itself, aerogel composite materials also have excellent performance in terms of flexibility. This allows it to be used on surfaces with different shapes, such as pipes, containers, buildings, etc.

4, good thermal insulation performance: the aerogel part of the aerogel composite material has a very low thermal conductivity (0.015~0.025W/m·K), which makes it able to provide good thermal insulation performance in high temperature environments.

5, good sound absorption performance: Because the aerogel material has a multi-pore structure, the aerogel composite material has good sound absorption performance, and can be applied in the field of noise control.

Although aerogels are relatively weak in terms of flexibility, they can be compounded with flexible materials. This composite material not only inherits the performance characteristics of aerogel, but also can solve the fragile problem of aerogel, with low density, low thermal conductivity, high specific surface area, strong flexibility, thermal insulation, high temperature resistance, sound absorption and noise reduction properties.
